They gave dad 300mg of Triceptal last night after we left and again this morning before mom and I got there. It was news to her and she said she wasn’t up to fighting with his doctor. So I’m hanging around here at the hospital, waiting for yet another battle. Of course, one of the less common side effects of this seizure medication is extreme drowsiness and he’s less alert than he was last night. Coincidence? Who knows. But I got mom to agree that there’s no reason to be giving him seizure medication. He did eat a pretty good breakfast and gave me a kiss again. And when I asked him if he wanted to listen to some classical music, he said “Yeah” in a very weak but distinct voice. His first word in over a week. He then fell asleep and mom went back home to rest. What a roller coaster for her.
When I got back to his room, his doctor has already left. The nurse’s aide said she told him my concerns about the continuation of the seizure meds and his response was something to the effect of “Well, I wasn’t the one who prescribed it.” Aaarrrggghhh. This doctor and hospital are in need of therapy, IMHO. Anyway, he wrote in the chart to stop the meds, so I got what I wanted. We’ll see if it has any effect.
Dad ate a huge lunch, and he definitely likes the music I brought him. Who knows what’ll happen next.
