I am One with a God I do not believe in

I’ve stumbled across two references — one at Utne Reader, the other at Salon — to a book that looks to be destined for the Real Joe shelves and maybe even a companion to our Affirmation Bullshit Generator: Daily afflictions : the agony of being connected to everything in the universe, by Andrew Boyd – AKA Brother Void, who’s got a very funny and cool web site. (Order the book via the Real Joe partnership at Powell’s or Amazon.) The author hung out for a while in Cafe Utne’s Spirit conference in May (free registration required).

A dark, twisted, existential manifesto posing as a book of daily inspiration. Revolutionizing the best-selling genre, this thinking man’s parody hijacks the format of daily affirmations, but offers a different message: only in paradox, truth; only in darkness, light; only in affliction, affirmation. These “daily afflictions” offer readers inspiration, practical advice, and food for thought, as they navigate the jungle of existential terror that begins anew each day.
