Double Helix, Single Guy

Barbara Ehrenreich’s NY Times book review of ”Genes, Girls, and Gamow: After the Double Helix” by James D. Watson is a hoot. The guy is apparently somewhat proud of his skirt-chasing foibles of 40 years ago when he and his pals were unraveling the mysteries of DNA. And it bugs the living hell out of her that he can STILL be so freaking clueless about A) gender issues; and B) his own psyche. 90% of her review deals with this.

Barbara, lighten up! He’s old. He’s famous. And he doesn’t teach in the humanities department. He’s appealing to the masses with the title and the stories, but I’m guessing — not having read it — that it’s mainly a science story. Emotional cluelessness shouldn’t be a fatal flaw in that kind of book.
