Churches are hosting job-hunting support groups? I had no idea that this was a phenomenon.
Anderson sees the job group as “a grief ministry. Every loss produces the grief process. With research saying that the average person will have five to seven different careers and 10 to 12 different employments, every one of those changes is a grief process.”
Every job/career change is a grief process? That’s more than an overstatement. There’s no doubt that many people who’ve been laid off or fired can make good use of support groups. But this is a big step beyond helping people deal with their grief. The churches are actually facilitating the networking, the hunt for jobs. It’s like hosting singles’ events as an add-on to support groups for the newly divorced. Seems like it’s going beyond the churches’ missions.
