I heard a very touching audio collage of the week’s tragic events this morning on NPR’s Weekend Edition. Hearing people sing “God Bless America” and “The Star Spangled Banner” brought tears of pride in my homeland to my eyes.
But when I heard a clip of a crowd of people chanting “USA! USA! USA!” tears of fear and sadness welled up in my eyes. It’s typically heard at an Olympic sporting event, and to hear it now makes it take on the feel of revenge. “We will beat you, whoever you are.”
