I really did enjoy the day yesterday, even though I didn’t accomplish nearly as much as I’d hoped. My Joe to Go yesterday seemed to help.

Instead of filling the day with work, I opted for a split — some R&R (a nap, racquetball, and two ping pong sessions with my daughter) and a few chores. I paid the bills and reconciled the checkbook which took a good 90 minutes, even though I use Quicken. But it wasn’t nearly the chore that it usually is. I framed it with some appreciation for what we’d spent money on, reminding myself that despite our recent indebtedness and modest lifestyle, we’re among the richest 1% of people who’ve ever lived.

Later, I cleaned my office and hauled a bunch of books home to make room for a guy who’s now sharing my downtown office. It wasn’t a nasty chore, but I never really like reorganizing and decluttering. This time, though, I just tried to notice all the books and the influence that some have had on me, thinking of them as old friends. I also bit the bullet and decided to get rid of most of the magazines that had piled up unread. That’s always hard for me, as I keep thinking I’ll get around to reading them, get caught up eventually, get fully informed. This time, the need for space and the realization of my current time limitations made it a lot easier to toss them. By the end, I felt pretty good.

I have a lot of email to reply to today. Maybe I can approach it with the attitude that it’s a good problem to have so many people who know me and are interested in what I’m up to.
