The power of a man’s virtue should not be measured by his special efforts but by his ordinary doing. – Blaise Pascal
This relates to my weblog entry on Friday about the problem with ‘greatness’ that gets attention in our culture. As I think about it, it’s an inspiring quote for planning my week around my roles as a husband, father, brother, citizen, friend, and neighbor, where nothing that I might do is going to fall into the category of greatness.
My tendency is to entertain goofball thoughts that seduce me into thinking that great things are possible in my roles as a writer, entrepreneur, or laughingly, as a recreational athlete. So it helps to remind me how Ordinary Doing by an Ordinary Joe is a very good thing.
