Items in the news this week that bug me include:
Something about this kind of ‘spiritual tourism’ is troubling, but other than the commercialism of it, I’m not exactly sure why it bothers me. I’m a seeker of sorts, as are the celebrities cited in this piece. If I was wealthy, would I do this? I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so.
Jesse Jackson acknowledges fathering child out of wedlock
Jackson’s apology seemed straightforward and complete upon first reading. But after reading the CNN piece, what’s troubling is that he didn’t acknowledge the seeming hypocrisy of being in the limelight as a spiritual advisor to Clinton in 1998 after the Lewinsky affair. Jackson’s baby is 20 months old now, so it appears that he was having his affair at the time. Even if not, he should say something about it. I wonder if I would if I did this?
Wellstone breaks pledge, will seek 3rd term
Political leanings aside, it’s troubling that MN Senator Paul Wellstone didn’t say anything about an option he could have chosen, i.e., keep his pledge but work hard to get someone else elected who’d follow in his political footsteps. That would seem to be the most honorable thing to do. I think Minnesotans are going to see this as simple hubris and he’s very likely to lose the election. Makes me wonder where my hubris with Real Joe will get me into trouble.
