We got about 5 inches of very heavy wet snow last night and it was gorgeous this morning. It stuck to everything, so I snapped a few photos while walking from my house to downtown for coffee. The last two weeks of our typical January thaw have turned our winter wonderland to dirty, March-like crust. Back to beauty.
The heavy snow makes pine trees picturesque, especially Norway (red) pines because their branches and needle clusters can hold so much snow. But what I noticed the most this morning are the trees and bushes that still have brown leaves. The white/brown contrast is suddenly stark. Even the big willows along the river have snow stuck to them, unusual since their branches are mainly vertical. It’s only when we get a good hoar frost that they turn gorgeous in winter.
I added the pictures to my Northfield city winter pics portfolio.
