A friend is a person

A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him, I may think aloud. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are 5 or 6 guys in my life that I’d consider good friends, with one of those being my best friend. Many married men will say that their wife is their best friend. In many ways, that’s true for me, but somehow marriage makes it a different kind of relationship than I normally think of when someone asks me if I have a best friend.

I’ve always struggled with friendships, in part, I think, because I’ve tended to not go out of my way very much for the person. I’ve had lots of buddies, sure, but not really any through-thick-and-thin friendships till the one I have now. I’m not sure I’m willing to invest more of myself in friendships right now. And maybe that’s ok.
