Prayers are in the news

Prayers are in the news today:
McCain’s skin cancer returns
Kursk (Russian Sub) prayer page on net
I find myself wondering about the differences in the two situations: I can see how McCain could benefit from people keeping him in their prayers. But since I don’t believe God has anything to do with the external events of the human race, it doesn’t make sense to me to say a “Please, God, don’t let those Russia sailors die” type prayer.
But if I can send a ‘prayer beam’ of love and good thoughts to my wife and kids while they undergo their surgeries, would it make sense to send a similar beam to the rescuers? (May you guys find the courage and wisdom to do all that you are capable of?) Or how about the government officials whose egos appear to have gotten in the way of prompt actions? (May you guys learn from your mistakes.) Or how about to the families of the sailors? (May you find the strength to handle this awful event into a positive way) Or the sailors themselves (May you guys face death with courage and peace.)
